In the rush of everyday life, it’s easy to fall back on consequences to get children to listen. But while punishment may work in the moment, it often teaches something very different from what we intend, and doesn’t build the cooperation we’re actually looking for.

We are all set for our short camping trip but, after a tough week, our son reached his limits and craved the comfort of home. Disappointing, yes. But seeing his exhaustion, the decision was clear: his wellbeing came first.

This unexpected change of plans became a lesson in listening and adapting. We missed the campfire, but gained a memory of empathy, growth, and prioritising emotional and physical wellbeing.
Parenting is messy and things don’t always go as planned, but the connections make it worth it.
